Description

... Doesn't Mean I Don't I Exist

This photo was taken from a balcony at the top of busy La Rambla, Barcelona. Countless people passed this man, seemingly they didn't notice him and if they did it was imperceptible and there was no acknowledgement. Watching the passers by I even started to doubt he was really there.

"I was here. I existed ... and someone cared enough about me in this world to take my picture." I was reminded of this quote last year when my Uncle died very suddenly and I realised I didn't have a photo of him and that it was doubtful he'd had his photo taken in a very long time. How long has it been since anyone took this man's photograph, had a conversation with him or even looked him in the eye? Maybe not long, maybe too long.

You know, at first I've passed by this photo many times myself. I'm actually glad I stopped and finally looked. It just goes to show that the old adage that "you can't judge a book by it's cover" is true. I love the story that you wrote in the artists comments. I think too many people will look at a photograph but not really "observe" it. If that makes sense. I like that you took this behind a glass wall/partition as an observer. It makes it more third person. As if you're not one of the people that have walked by and not noticed this man. This man, no matter what his particular status in life is right now is still a human. He has a past of experiences, family and friends. I have never been in need of the basics of life be it: shelter, food or clothing. So, I can only think I know about this man. If I stopped to talk to him we might become friends. It's a shame that people are too concerned how they look in others eyes and will not reach out of their "social standing" to others. I really like the concept of your photograph and you executed it very well. The story makes it all come together.
